The Grand Tour of Morocco: 10 Days of Contrasts

Discover the essence of Morocco on a circular route designed to make the most of every moment. Starting and ending in Marrakech, this 10-day itinerary takes you through the country’s most iconic landscapes—from the High Atlas peaks and Merzouga’s golden dunes to the historic maze of Fez and the blue dream of Chefchaouen. Cross the country via the coastal elegance of Rabat and Casablanca, immersing yourself in Moroccan culture, cuisine and magic. Without a doubt, this will be the trip of a lifetime. 

Itinerary:

 DAY 1: MENARA AIRPORT - MARRAKECH

Welcome at the airport and transfer to our charming riad. Just a 5-minute walk away is the enigmatic Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, a famous meeting place for people in Marrakech with an incomparable atmosphere: snake charmers, dancers, storytellers, fortune tellers. Take a stroll around the square and have dinner at one of the many stalls serving traditional Moroccan food.

DAY 2: MARRAKECH - HIGH ATLAS - OUARZAZATE - DADES GORGES

Depart from Marrakech via the Tichka Pass, crossing the Atlas Mountains and stopping to enjoy the magnificent views along the way, take a break, or snap some photos whenever you like. We’ll continue to Ait Ben Haddou, one of the most spectacular fortified villages in southern Morocco, which you’ll have a chance to visit. It is iconic as several international films have been shot there, including Obelix, Gladiator and Sahara. Then on to Ouarzazate, Morocco’s film capital, and along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. From here, we’ll take a track offering the chance to experience the tranquillity of the mountains inhabited by Berber nomads. Overnight in the heart of the Dades Gorges. DAY 3: DADES GORGES - TODRA GORGES - ERFOUD - MERZOUGA

After breakfast, we head towards the desert via one of Morocco’s spectacular sights, the Todra Gorges. It’s an ideal place for a walk and some exploring. We’ll continue to Merzouga, where you’ll ride camels to a nomad tent among the dunes, where you’ll spend the night. Accommodation at: https://orient-desertcamp.com/ 


DAY 4: DESERT – VISIT TO THE NOMADS  – DESERT

Sunrise over the sea of dunes. After breakfast, ride back to Merzouga by camel, then visit Khamlia, a village known for its inhabitants, who are descended from people brought from Sudan during the historic slave trade. They are excellent musicians, and music is their way of life. Enjoy a short Gnawa music performance with them. Return to our 4 × 4 and drive along one of the tracks used in the “Paris-Dakar Rally”, visiting the Khol mines and the remains of a French and Berber village. We’ll stop to admire the panoramic views across the Erg Chebbi desert. Meet the desert nomads, now settling into a more sedentary lifestyle, and enjoy tea with them while learning about their way of life. Return to the hotel. Free time in the afternoon. DAY 5: DESERT – ARFOUD – FEZ 

After breakfast, we’ll head towards the desert, passing through the cedar forest, the MIDELT pass, the ERRACHIDIA reservoir, the magnificent ZIZ Valley, and the town of ERFOUD (the gateway to the desert). Then we’ll continue along the track at night to reach the ERG CHEBBI dunes. Back to the hotel so you can rest. Accommodation at the Kasbah Hotel (dinner and breakfast). DAY 6: FEZ - CHEFCHAOUEN 

After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour with a local Fez guide, with a special focus on the medina and the artisans’ quarter, particularly the tanneries. Fez is the oldest of the imperial cities and the country’s spiritual centre. We’ll start with a panoramic view from one of the surrounding hills, then head to the Royal Palace with its monumental bronze gates. We’ll cross the Mellah, or Jewish quarter, before exploring the medina on foot. We’ll visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss and a medersa. Then we’ll continue through the artisans’ quarter, especially the tanneries. After lunch, depart from Fez for the small blue fortified town called Chaouen. Its buildings and houses are painted blue and white, and it’s one of the prettiest towns in the Rif Mountains. You’ll have free time to explore Chefchaouen at your own pace. Overnight in a local riad in the medina.


DAY 7: CHEFCHAOUEN

After breakfast, enjoy a free day to explore Uta el-Hammam Square (the heart of the city and an ideal place to eat), the Grand Mosque (with its unusual octagonal tower) and the Kasbah (with its garden, museum and art gallery). Just outside the medina, the most famous attraction is the Ras El-Maa waterfall, where the sound of the water and the green hills offer a breath of fresh air. Keep walking to enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city.


DAY 8: CHEFCHAOUEN – RABAT 

After breakfast, depart for Rabat to visit the political and administrative capital. Visit the mausoleum, this prestigious building erected in memory of His Majesty Mohammed V, made of white marble and cedar wood and adorned with chiselled bronze; the mosque and Hassan Tower, with 200 columns and its beautiful pink-stone minaret. DAY 9: RABAT-CASABLANCA- MARRAKECH
Depart for Marrakech via Casablanca. On arrival, begin a tour of the city, including the famous and monumental Hassan II Mosque. An optional visit inside the Hassan Mosque is available. After lunch, continue to Marrakech (free afternoon). Overnight in a riad with breakfast. Accommodation at https://riadpapillon.com/


DAY 10: MARRAKECH - AIRPORT

After breakfast, depending on your flight departure time, transfer to the airport. End of our services.
